Researching the Lived Experience of Child-Counselors¡¯ Performing Child-Parent Relationship Therapy: With a Special Focus on CPRT

Abstract

|
In this study, we aimed to improve the understandings about the experiences of child counselors while conducting Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT). The sources of study were collected from the in-depth interview of three experienced child counselors and were analyzed by phenomenological study. A analysis of data has performed by following the timeline of CPRT. Main themes extracted from the interview prior to performing CPRT were (1) Apprehension never disappears; (2) The parents are out of my depth. Main themes extracted from the interview in the early stage of CPRT were; (3) I was trying to have my cake and eat it; (4) An eyesore. In the middle period of CPRT main themes were extracted; (5)Teaching in mission; (6) We had the different rulers. Main themes extracted from the interview in the last stage of CPRT were (7) CPRT really works!; (8) I can see the path they walked on. We could extract two essential meanings of following from the twelve main themes; A coupled relationship: participants experienced a psychological contact with parents as both, not a 3rd person or subject of analysis; Mastery: participants had re-established and mastered their knowledge about the counseling by reviewing their experience from the educational process. As a result of this study, we could establish the importance of counselor¡¯s multi-functioning of psychological counseling and education which had not highlighted until now. Moreover, an importance of parent¡¯s education were highlighted from the analysis of the difficulties and following growth of counselor experienced in the progress of parent¡¯s education.
